“Things” is a selected series of paintings by renowned artist Svay Ken. Although in his 80s, Svay Ken is one of the most prolific contemporary Cambodian artists. He is self-taught and draws on his environment and memories as the subjects of his paintings. This series in particular is unique because of the conspicuous absence of human figures (except for #15 Road Marker). Each painting features objects that are often seen and used every day, retaining the presence of human contact and carrying its own unique history. The isolated subject allows us to thoroughly explore objects that give us a glimpse of another’s life—and perhaps to experience it, if only for a moment.
